    Options

DC++ - Again, I have to open two ports for this software. And again, it was a hub based software, which I still really hate. Searches sucked. Speeds sucked. Joining hubs sucked. Stability of speeds in unknown because I couldn't get anything to work. When I was able to find a song to attempt, it refused to download. As for the help and options, they weren't good. The help pages were some of the most poorly written pieces I have ever seen. The options were many and poorly laid out making it more comfusing.

    Verdict : Uninstall/Ports closed

Emule - There were a fair bit of options but it was simple to set up. Required port forward and hub connection which I'm not a fan off. As for speed, the stability of it was horrible. You connect to other users was unstable, slow and prone to disconnect.

    Verdict : Uninstall/Ports closed

Frostwire - Using the latest version I was able to use it to get most of the files I looked for at great speeds. Couple this with Soulseek (Another p2p software I didn't review) and BT and you can get almost anything you want. Options where simple, and it was brain dead easy to set-up.

    Verdict : Stays installed

Shareaza : This software is really a pity. It's a genisus piece of software but support and development have basically stopped on it leaving many many many bugs un fix. The best part of this software is the networks it spans and it's built in BT client. While it is a pretty powerful client I don't think it can stand against uTorrent.

Verdict : Watch carefully for further development

KCeasy : Don't even test this. Its so full of spyware, ads, and crap it's horrible. Its connects to the Ares network which is dieing from an overflow of spyware. While its seems to be a good piece of software, don't bother. It really isn't.

    Verdict : Ban's webite/Uninstall

Overall - While DC++ Emule have massive networks and are ideal for university students I would still suggest they use Soulseek instead because of it's lack of hubs and effiecnt interface and build. As for those of us unlucky enough to live in the real world, I am going to have to say, Frostwire, the spin off of Limewire, is the most stable, spyware free and fastest of the lot I tested. If shareaza is ever to receive an update again, I will test it again but until then it's just too underdeveloped.

Well frostwire will have to replace my limewire. Odd that Shareaza managed to get second place after you predicted it last. You were spot on with Frostwire though.

Ya, i remembered using Shareaza from a year or so ago and I couldn't get it to work but its working fine now. I joined their forums and dug around and found they are still developing though it goes slowly. They hope to have a new version out in a few months which is meant not to add anything but improve EVERYTHING! the change log for the new version is massive!

i'm sorry to bring up a really old post but i've just uninstalled bearshare due to it's whole bearflix/imesh/riaa mess, and i've been googling alternatives. i used limewire previously, but stopped when i came across bearshare. now that bearshare is out of the question, i came back to limewire, only to find information on frostwire. i know nothing about the latter program, but do you recommend it over the original limewire? i'd just like a good client to download music/shows/movies...is frostwire good? or does it lack as many search results as someone would usually find in limewire/bearshare?...thanks so much, and sorry again i found this journal entry through google, and i thought you might be a great help.

Go for Frost Wire. Lime Wire now blocks unlicensed contents. Frost Wire don't.
